Holmfirth Choral Society . . . .
Although there was a Choral Society in Holmfirth in the latter half of the nineteenth century, the present Holmfirth Choral Society was founded in 1945, initially as Holmfirth Parish Church Choral Society, to perform at a benefit concert for victims of a catastrophic flood which had occurred in Holmfirth. The concert was so successful that the choir’s scope was widened and it has continued to the present. It is a non-auditioned choir, open to all singers who enjoy the repertoire, mostly of oratorios, masses, and similar music. Its membership, currently around 55, is building up again following Covid; just prior to that it had reached an all-time level of just over 90 members. The choir has traditionally performed regularly in Holmfirth’s Civic Hall, often with orchestral accompaniment, but has also given concerts in various venues in the surrounding area, including local churches, and Huddersfield Town Hall.
